Knee Arthroscopy is a surgical technique that can diagnose and treat problems in the knee joint. During the procedure, your surgeon will make a very small incision and insert a tiny camera, called an arthroscope, into your knee.

This allows them to view the inside of the joint on a screen. The surgeon can then investigate a problem with the knee and, if necessary, correct the issue using small instruments within the arthroscope.

Arthroscopy diagnoses several knee problems, such as a torn meniscus or a misaligned patella (kneecap). It can also repair the ligaments of the joint.

There are limited risks to the procedure and the outlook is good for most patients. Your recovery time and prognosis will depend on the severity of the knee problem and the complexity of the required procedure.

The majority of knee scopes can be performed as a day case at a day hospital, limiting costs and time away from home.

The following procedures are done Arthroscopically:

Diagnostic Arthroscopy

To make a diagnoses or to confirm a suspected diagnoses

  • Meniscus Surgery (excision or repair)
  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction (ACL)
  • Posterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction (PCL)

Arthroscopic Assisted Surgery

Some procedures needs a combination of Arthroscopy and Open Surgery.

During these procedures some elements are done Arthroscopically before or during the open procedure The following procedures are typically a combination procedure.

  • Patellar Realignment
  • Antero-lateral Ligament Reconstruction (ALL)
  • Medial and Lateral Collateral Ligament reconstructions  (MCL and LCL)
  • Certain Limited Intra-articular Traumatic Conditions e.g. Osteochondral Lesions

KNEE
Open surgery

Certain conditions cannot be done Arthroscopically and needs careful dissection through anatomical plains or approaches through Open Surgery. 

The following procedures are done through careful open surgery. 

  • Fractures of bones around the knee
  • Osteotomies around the knee (correcting alignment disorders)
  • Knee replacements .Total knee replacements and hemi (half)- knee replacements
